The mosque derives its name from the phrase Banya Bashi, which means many baths. The most outstanding feature of the mosque is that it was actually built over natural thermal spas; one can even see the steam rising from vents in the ground near the mosque walls. The mosque is famous for its large dome, diameter 15m, and the minaret. The mosque is located in the center of Plovdiv and was built on the site of Plovdiv cathedral church "St. Petka Tarnovo soon after the conquest of the city by he Ottoman army (1363 - 1364). At the time of Sultan Murad II (1421 - 1451) the old building was demolished and, in its place, erected a mosque today, called Ulu Cuma mosque - the main Friday Mosque. Dzhumayata is one of the oldest Ottoman religious buildings in the Balkans. It is among the largest - an imposing rectangular building, whose salon has a size 33 on 27 meters. The construction it shows the influence of the Byzantine and Christian architecture and engineering - two layers of bricks masonry after each layer of stone.Unlike the later-domed mosques, Cuma is called. Multiple. The domes are nine in number and are covered with lead sheets. In the northeast corner of the main facade was erected minaret, decorated with a diagonal square grid of red bricks on a background of white stucco. The interior of the mosque is decorated with murals with floral ornaments - twigs, flowers and garlands, sandwiched between medallions with quotations from the Koran.
